About Us

Southwest Neighborhood Association ( SWNA ) a non-profit organization began in 1996 during a period when cruising on S. Seneca was at its peak. With the cruising came crime and the concerns were high. Citizens banded together to work with the cruisers to provide guidelines for a safe area to cruise. During this time frame, the neighborhood parade was established as a means for cruisers, community, and police officers to work together on a project. Cruising is now almost a thing of the past; and the parade has been discontinued. Crime has also decreased.
SWNA also works closely with police officers in our area. The SWNA area boundaries are Kellogg. south to 55th St.. and McLean Blvd./ Gold St west to Meridian. The community policing officers on beats 27 & 28 are usually at our meetings each month. They help to keep us informed of the good and the bad going on in our community. They answer questions and help us to resolve problems. Clean up efforts for people who are physically or financially unable are done on a frequent basis. SWNA has a neighborhood scheduled for this year make sure you contact a board member for times and places to drop off.
In the past years, SWNA worked with SWIM ( South West Interfaith Ministries ) in helping Operation Holiday provide for our own zip codes 67217. We are active in community affairs such as Community Reconnection, Racial Profiling committee, serving on the oral review board ( Police Dept. ) many of our members, both past and present, have served on the District 4 Advisory Board ( DAB 4 ) for the City of Wichita.
We encourage you to have neighborhood Watch programs. This helps to deter the criminal element from coming into our area and gaining a stronghold. Keeping your residence clean and neat also helps. We would also like to encourage you one and all to come to our meetings, get to know us , and we get to know you. Bring your ideas, and listen to ours, and let us work together to strive for a better community area.
A strong neighborhood is a valuable tool in maintaining healthy communities. Neighborhood organizations bring together people of diverse backgrounds, who share common concerns for their safety, properties, homes and community interests. Neighborhood organizations help city staff and elected officials identify and resolve issues and concerns in a particular area.
There is strength in numbers - having a unified voice can make a difference.

SWNA Expanded our Bourdaries to the South and North

The SWNA has expanded our boundaries for MacArthur on the South to 55th Street and May on the North to Kellogg. We at the SWNA feel that we further help additional residents to the south and by working with our Wichita Community Policing Officer this will complete the SouthWest Wichita. In addition we expanded to the North to help McCormick Neighborhood Assn. with future growth.
